Stigma

Misinformation and ignorance have led to negative stereotypes about foster kids, foster parents and the foster care system. These misconceptions hurt foster kids in many ways. Their self-esteem is damaged by attitudes that characterize them as different or less than other kids. Some parents actually prevent their children from being friends with foster kids. Stigma can also discourage potential foster parents, volunteers and mentors from getting involved which deprives foster children of key supports.

We need to change the way we think about foster care. As a community, we must understand that foster kids are our kids, and that collectively, we can work to ensure their success. We can make sure they get the love, patience and support they need, just like any other child. Together, we can put aside the horror stories on the news and start celebrating the foster kids in our community who are doing good.
