Stigma
Foster kids face many challenges due to the fact that their birth parents are unable to properly care for them. However, not all of their obstacles come from their family situation. Some of the biggest hurdles come from the stigma society has towards foster children.
Misinformation and ignorance have led to negative stereotypes about foster kids, foster parents and the foster care system. These misconceptions hurt foster kids in many ways. Their self-esteem is damaged by attitudes that characterize them as different or less than other kids. Some parents actually prevent their children from being friends with foster kids. Stigma can also stand in the way of these kids because it discourages potential foster parents, volunteers and mentors from getting involved.
We need to change the way we think about foster care. As a community, we must understand that foster kids are our kids, and that collectively, we can work to ensure their success. We can make sure that like any other kids they get the love, patience and support they need. Together, we can put aside the horror stories on the news and start celebrating the foster kids in our community who are doing good.
